The First Session of the “Alumni+” Series Successfully Held |Professor Pang Xun Explores AI Alignment and Global Risk Politics

On the evening of October 31, 2025, as the School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University approaches its 30th anniversary, the Alumni Office launched the inaugural session of the “Alumni+” Series, an initiative designed to foster interdisciplinary and intercollegiate dialogue among alumni across different fields.

The first event, held at the SIS Café, also served as a joint alumni gathering with Washington University in St. Louis. Nearly 30 alumni attended, representing sectors such as finance, insurance, technology, academia, and government, including participants from China International Capital Corporation, China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation, China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Life Insurance, and ByteDance.

Ms. Jin Rui, representative of the SIS Alumni Office, extended a warm welcome to all participants, expressing hopes that the “Alumni+” platform would promote multidimensional exchange and strengthen the SIS alumni network.

Themed “Good Order, Bad Order? The Global Risk Politics of AI Alignment,” the event featured Professor Pang Xun as keynote speaker and Mr. Zhang Hongliang, Vice President of the Washington University in St. Louis Beijing Alumni Association, as moderator.

 

Self-introduction Session

Through engaging interaction and discussion, Professor Pang analyzed the applications and potential risks of artificial intelligence in international political decision-making. She introduced her team’s latest research, which built 3,973 large language model (LLM) agents to explore cognitive biases in complex decision-making processes. The findings revealed significant differences between AI and human biases, raising important implications for global AI governance.

In the discussion session, alumni exchanged views on AI ethics, global cooperation, and governance challenges. The open and dynamic dialogue not only broadened participants’ perspectives but also strengthened connections between alumni communities.

Interactive Discussion

As an innovative initiative in alumni engagement, the “Alumni+” Series aims to connect alumni across institutions and disciplines, expand SIS’s international alumni network, and create a platform for continuous learning and exchange. Building on the success of its inaugural session, the series will continue to collaborate with leading global universities to explore cutting-edge international issues.
